The state-of-the-art alternative to LASIK
The Visian ICL is an FDA-approved implantable contact lens that works with your natural eye to correct nearsightedness. The state-of-the-art eye implant is made from biocompatible collagen, which means it works with your body’s natural chemistry without being toxic to living tissue.
Dr. In Shin is certified to perform the Visian ICL procedure at Montgomery Eye Physicians. Dr. Shin is also board-certified by the American Association of Ophthalmology and has extensive training in cornea, cataract, and refractive surgery.
What is the Visian ICL?
The Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a soft, flexible eye implant that is inserted into the posterior chamber of the eye, behind the iris, to correct nearsightedness.
The ICL functions to focus light on the retina so that images are clear and crisp, similar to how glasses and contact lenses correct nearsightedness. Nearsightedness is a focusing error that occurs when light from far-away objects is focused in front of the retina, instead of on the retina.
Advantages of the Visian ICL
High Definition Vision – After the Visian ICL procedure, most patients experience vision that is sharper, clearer, and more vivid than with glasses or contacts.
Permanent, Yet Removable – While the Visian ICL was created to permanently correct nearsightedness, the lens implant can be easily removed or replaced if your prescription changes.
Short Recovery – The Visian ICL is an additive procedure that only requires a small incision to insert the implant. Most patients are back to work in as little as one day.
Safety & Patient Satisfaction – Since the Visian ICL was approved by the FDA in 2005, over 850,000 procedures have been completed globally. 99% of patients are satisfied with the results.
No Dry Eye – Unlike LASIK, the Visian ICL is an additive procedure that requires no removal or reshaping of corneal tissue, which helps reduce your risk of post-operative dry eye syndrome.
UV Protection – Long-term exposure to the sun can increase your risk of developing eye problems. The Visian ICL is made from advanced material that contains a built-in UV blocker to protect your eyes from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
How does the Visian ICL work?
Light enters the eye through the cornea, the transparent layer of tissue at the front of the eye. When light is focused in front of the retina instead of on the retina, blurry distant vision can occur.
The Visian ICL helps to focus light that enters the cornea, so it can properly reach the retina. A clear image on the retina results in clear distance vision.
What is the Visian ICL procedure like?
On the day of surgery, a small incision is made in the cornea and the Visian ICL is inserted between the iris, the colored part of your eye, and your natural lens. Dr. Shin will place numbing eye drops in your eyes, so you won’t feel any pain.
The complete Visian ICL procedure typically takes 10 minutes per eye. Most patients experience vision improvement immediately following the surgery, with an even better vision the next day.
Am I a good candidate for Visian ICL?
If you have a moderate to a high degree of nearsightedness (-3 to -20 diopters) with minor astigmatism (2.5 diopters or less), are between the ages of 21 and 45, and in good health, you may be an excellent candidate for the Visian ICL. Qualified candidates also have stable prescriptions that haven’t fluctuated in the last year, with no history of eye diseases such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.
The Visian ICL is ideal for patients who don’t qualify for LASIK. Since no corneal tissue is removed during the procedure, corneal thickness and does not affect candidacy.
