Tom Lyle Mitchell, Jr., M.D. is a cum laude graduate in biomedical engineering from the University of Tennessee and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He received his Medical Degree, cum laude, from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his internship in internal medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. Prior to completing a residency in ophthalmology at the Eye Foundation Hospital, UAB Medical Center, Birmingham, he practiced as an emergency room physician.
Dr. Mitchell is board-certified in ophthalmology and joined Montgomery Eye Physicians in 1987. He practices comprehensive ophthalmology and specializes in eyelid surgery, having performed functional blepharoplasty for the past 25 plus years. Originally from Birmingham, Dr. Mitchell and his wife Darby have three married sons and three grandchildren. He enjoys fly fishing, tennis, gardening and playing the guitar.
