One of the most commonly performed vision correction procedures is LASIK. Millions of people annually have the procedure to reduce their need for glasses or contacts.
To perform LASIK surgery on the central portion of the cornea, the surgeon must first create a flap. There are two methods currently is use to accomplish this task.
Microkeratome LASIK uses a mechanical blade that glides across the surface of the cornea.
The microkeratome has moving parts and requires the blade be inserted and oscillate freely. Once the flap is created, the central portion of the cornea is treated with the Excimer laser and the flap is repositioned.
This method has been used to perform LASIK surgery for years. While a safe procedure in the hands of skilled surgeons using modern microkeratomes, most complications that arise following LASIK surgery can be attributed to the use of a microkeratome.
Typically, microkeratome LASIK is less expensive than iLASIK because it only requires the use of the Excimer laser for treatment.
